“There’s no such thing as a ‘bad’ exercise!” This seems to be a pretty popular line that gets thrown around a lot these days. I mean… not only are there “bad” bodybuilding exercises depending on what the intended goal is, there are also flat out terrible muscle building exercises too, and the standing plate pinch press is one of them. There isn’t much more to say about this supposed chest exercise beyond what’s in the video… but the bottom line is that the resistance is literally pulling in the wrong direction. It’s the same idea as holding a barbell out in front of your body from a standing position and then “rowing” it toward yourself and calling it a back exercise. It only feels like something significant is happening with this movement during chest workouts because you’re squeezing your hands together and flexing your chest the whole time. If you wanted to make this at least *somewhat* effective to build chest muscle then you’d need to perform it lying down. (Though that’s still a really poor way to do chest presses compared to just using dumbbells or a barbell) Another argument people make is that they perform pinch presses as a way to “activate” their chest. If you want to activate your chest then you do that by performing high quality chest exercises with good technique. That will give you all the chest activation you could ever dream of, and pre-fatiguing yourself with something like this is just going to reduce the overall quality of the exercises that truly matter. If you want to build a bigger chest, this is not the way to do it.
